PIX - Instant Payment Method

PIX is an instant payment system created by the Central Bank of Brazil, and it has become essential to the modernization of the national financial system. It enables free transfers, 24/7, with immediate confirmation between banks, fintechs, and digital wallets.

In just a few years, PIX has become indispensable in Brazilians’ daily lives and is now one of the most advanced payment systems in the world.

What was the challenge?

What was the challenge?

Documentation and short time

Integrate PIX into Banco do Brasil’s mobile app and internet banking while ensuring a seamless user experience and strict compliance with BACEN’s regulatory and security standards.

To tackle this, I help to led the UX process, overseeing:

✔ User research to understand transfer pain points

✔ A design sprint to rapidly validate concepts

✔ Usability testing to refine the flow

✔ Information architecture for the UI designer to implement

The Process of UX

I actively help to led the UX process throughout the discovery and design phases, which included:

✔ Conducting benchmarks, WeChat Pay (China), Alipay (China) and UPI (India)

✔ Conducting user research to uncover transfer-related pain points
✔ Leading a design sprint to quickly validate key concepts
✔ Running usability tests to refine and optimize user flows
✔ Structuring the information architecture to guide the UI implementation

Despite the intense pace and scope, contributing to one of Brazil’s most transformative digital payment initiatives was an incredible professional milestone.

Creating PIX on Banco do Brasil

II was responsible for processing the information brought from BACEN documents and usability tests carried out by the team of researchers, creating navigable prototypes in low and high fidelity.

Studying the data

Working on the PIX project was both highly challenging and deeply rewarding. Integrating such a complex payment system into Banco do Brasil’s mobile and internet banking platforms required balancing innovation, security, and regulatory compliance under tight deadlines.

Understanding the user's behavior

A sitemap, user flow, user journey and design critique were developed before testing the prototypes in bank branches.

The results

By the end of 2021, 45% of Brazil’s adult
population had adopted PIX.

PIX is growing fast

Brazil’s Central Bank must be the most innovative central bank in the world.

Over the last 18 months, we’ve seen the fastest rollout of a faster payment method in history — PIX.

In 18 months, PIX adoption reached 124 million users. India’s UPI reached the same number of users in 4 years.

In March 2022, over 1.6 Billion transactions were carried out on PIX.

"In 1 year after launch, more than 17.5 million Pix keys were registered with a movement of more than R$1 trillion between amounts sent and received through the Banco do Brasil app."
